Susan Sarandon is an American film, television and stage actress whose career spans more than five decades. She is one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation and has won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
She was born Susan Abigail Tomalin in New York City and graduated from the Catholic University of America. She made her film debut in the 1970 drama Joe, followed by television roles and the cult musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which brought her wider recognition.
She received Academy Award nominations for Atlantic City, Thelma & Louise, Lorenzo's Oil and The Client. She won Best Actress for her role as Helen Prejean in the 1995 film Dead Man Walking. Her other well-known works include The Witches of Eastwick, Bull Durham, Little Women, Stepmom and the television series Feud.
In addition to acting, she has long been involved in political and social issues, including opposition to the death penalty and armed conflict. She has also served as a goodwill ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
