KRS-One, born Lawrence Parker, is an American rapper and singer from the Bronx. His stage name stands for “Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone”; he also uses the name Teacha.
In the mid-1980s, he founded the hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions with DJ Scott La Rock. After Scott La Rock was shot dead following the release of their debut Criminal Minded, KRS-One continued the group essentially as a solo project.
He has released recordings under his own name since 1993. His well-known songs include Sound of da Police, Love's Gonna Get'cha (Material Love) and My Philosophy.
Following Scott La Rock's death, he founded the Stop the Violence Movement. He is a vegan activist and also addresses veganism in songs such as Beef; his work has influenced numerous hip-hop artists.
